Ukraine

Since the war began in February 2022, over 30% of the land in Ukraine is now contaminated by landmines, UXO and cluster munition—a country once known as the ‘Breadbasket of Europe’ supplying excess wheat to North Africa.

Turning Mines to Vines

Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Roots of Peace has established a partnership with MAG (Mines Advisory Group) and Tetra Tech to eradicate landmines in Mykolaiv—a once thriving grape growing region prior to the planting of landmines.

Roots of Peace has partnered with Rotary International to establish a Global Grant, and hosted an immersive regenerative viticulture training program for Ukrainian vintners, showcasing the positive impact of agriculture as a means of fostering global peace and community resilience.

Demine - Replant - Rebuild

The Ukrainian government has strongly supported the efforts of Roots of Peace to transform minefields into sustainable vineyards and farmland—renewing the soil and soul of Ukraine.

In June 2024,

six distinguished Ukrainian vintners engaged in a comprehensive "hands-on" training hosted by Violet Grgich, CEO, Grgich Hills Estate, focusing on regenerative viticulture and natural winemaking. This initiative not only aims to elevate the quality and sustainability of Ukrainian wines but also demonstrates the powerful role of agriculture in peacebuilding.

We are deeply honored to share our expertise in regenerative practices with our Ukrainian colleagues. This program is a testament to our belief that agriculture bridges cultures and supports communities through the most challenging times.
— Violet Grgich, President and CEO of Grgich Hills Estate

The training leverages techniques that have revitalized vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma drawing parallels with the current needs of Ukrainian vineyards.
